Brief History of CGS

Initially known as Centre for Research in Groundwater Processes, commissioned by AWRAC in July 1987 the Centre commenced operations in December 1987. The CGS has been engaged in numerous research projects in all mainland states of Australia and several international projects. Partners names have changed and there has been growth from the five original SA members:

  • CSIRO Division of Water Resources
  • CSIRO Division of Soils
  • Flinders University of South Australia
  • Mines and Energy South Australia
  • Engineering and Water Supply Department of SA
In August 1995 the Centre expanded to 10 partners comprising public and private organisations in Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia, with further expansion into New South Wales in 2006.

CGS Directors have been: Graham Allison, July 1987- December 1989; Peter Dillon, January 1990 - August 1995; Chris Barber, August 1997 to 2005, Research Director David Reynolds.

CGS Chairmen have been: Bryan Harris 1992-2002; John Wheldrake 2002-2005, Neil Power current Chair.


Over this time, CGS has produced over 30 PhD and Masters graduates, many of whom are now leaders in their fields in Australia, has had numerous visiting scientists, visiting students and contributed significantly to professional development via the national Groundwater Short Course Program.
